Malverne educator nominated for Teachers Hall of Fame

Marguerite Izzo, a fifth-grade teacher at Davison Avenue Intermediate School in the Malverne School District, has been nominated for the National Teachers Hall of Fame, an annual award given to only five teachers in the nation who have more than 20 years of experience. If chosen as a member, Izzo will participate in webinars, workshops and a speaker’s bureau, as well as represent and market the NTHF through public appearances and educational endeavors.

According to its official website, the mission of the NTHF is to recognize and honor exceptional career teachers, encourage excellence in teaching, and preserve the rich heritage of the teaching profession in the United States.

She was chosen for this award on the basis of merit to educators who have distinguished themselves in teaching respect and understanding through project-based learning, or who have the potential for this distinction. It was through this fellowship that NTHF’s executive directors and the Lowell Milken Fellows nominated her for the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

Izzo is the 2007 New York State Teacher of the Year and a member of the board of directors of the National Network of State Teachers of the Year. She was also recently named a winner of the Lowell Milken Center Fellowship.

She is working with the New York State Education Department to bring the voice of the practitioner to policymakers on the state level. In addition, she co-directs Malverne’s Teacher Center and is an adjunct professor of literacy at Adelphi University.
Izzo is currently applying for the NTHF award and will be notified of her status in the spring.
