Arrest — DWI

A West Hempstead man was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 1, around 4:50 a.m. after he was seen driving erratically along Hempstead Turnpike.

According to police, 21-year-old Kelvin Anorue, of Janos Lane, was observed operating a 2007 Honda, with extensive front-end damage, in an erratic manner westbound along the street. A subsequent stop of Anorue’s vehicle revealed that he had been operating under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.

During the investigation, Fifth Precinct police officers received a 9-1-1 call from an auto accident where one vehicle had left the scene. It was determined that Anorue and his car were involved in the earlier crash.

Police also reported that after the car accident, Anorue had allegedly forcibly removed a cell phone from a 51-year-old man’s pocket with the threat of a weapon. He then fled the scene in his car. No injuries were reported.

Anorue was charged with third-degree robbery, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an auto accident without report, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and numerous vehicle and traffic law violations. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 2. Bail was set at $2,500 bond, $1,250 cash. Anorue was expected back in court on Jan. 15.

Arrest — Assault

According to detectives with the Third Squad, a Lakeview man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a Nassau County police officer in the emergency room of Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow on Dec. 24 at about 12:50 a.m.

Police were called to help public safety officers who were engaged in a struggle with Warren Coffie, 27, of Lafayette Avenue in Lakeview, who had reportedly become violent and distruptive while in the emergency room.

While trying to restrain Coffie, one police officer suffere a severe leg fracture. A second police officer arrived to assist the injured officer and secure Coffie. It was then that an employee of the hospital, 47-year-old Tony McGee, of Greenlawn, became physically confrontational with the officer and attempted to pull Coffie away from him.

McGee continued to interfere with the arrest and was eventually arrested himself and charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Coffie was charged with second-degree assault. Coffie was arrainged at First District Court in Hempstead on Dec. 25. His bail was set at $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash.

Burglary

Fifth Precinct detectives reported that a West Hempstead woman reported on Dec. 28 that her Broadway home had been burglarized several days earlier, possibly on Dec. 23, around 9 p.m.

After realizing that her engagement ring was missing on Dec. 28, the victim looked her jewelry boxes and saw that they were empty. She told officers that she had noticed on Dec. 23 that the bathroom window was unlocked, the screen was pushed up and a recycling bin was leaning against the house by the window. There were no other signs of entry.

Robbery

According to Fifth Squad detectives, four men armed with an old silver-colored revolver entered the Lakeview Deli, located at 478 Lakeview Ave., on Jan. 1 and 9:10 p.m. and demanded money from the store owner. The victim complied, emptied the cash register and handed the subjects an undetermined amount of money. Cash was also taken from the wallet of a second victim, an employee of the store. No other people were present in the store at the time of the robbery. The four subjects fled on foot northbound on Langdon Boulevard. No injuries were reported.

The subjects are described as black men, between the ages of 15 and 19 years. They were said to be wearing black ski masks and dark-colored clothing.
