Second annual Souper Scavenger Hunt is a success

Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Malverne Civic Association collected more than a ton of food last week as a result of their second annual Souper Scavenger Hunt.

From 1 to 3 p.m. last Saturday, April 9, teams of family, friends and neighbors, old and young alike, walked or drove around their assigned territory in Malverne to help collect non-perishable food items to stock the OLL food pantry. Teams were awarded one point for each pound of goods they collected and extra points were given for items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly and canned fruits.

About 68 people, forming 14 teams, participated in the event and collected approximately 2,200 pounds of food. “The response was truly overwhelming,” said Linda Baldacchino, the church’s youth minister and organizer of the event.

For the most food collected overall, first place went to Folksy Blue Lady, followed by Souper Hunters in second place and Cool Cats in third. The award for most food per person in a group went to Sunshine Lanes, in first place, with The Three Girls and Knowing Christ Really Lives in second and third place respectively.

Baldacchino said that the community was more aware of the event this year, but the teams were not able to reach everyone and several people called the church to have their food picked up. “We’re hoping to get more teams involved next year,” Baldacchino said.
