Q & A with Dr. Patrick Coonan, Malverne BOE president

Posted

Malverne Board of Education President Dr. Patrick Coonan is running unopposed for re-election to his seat.

Years on board: 8
Years in Malverne: Life-long resident
Profession: Dean, School of Nursing, Adelphi University

Q: What are your greatest accomplishments on the board?
A: We have created a lot of new programs and policies and things goings forward and they need to be completed. We delivered the three lowest budgets in the last 15 years in the Malverne school district and we were able to increase our students performance and we’ve successfully had the bond passed. There hasn’t been a bond in this district in 30 years. We restructured the elementary schools looking for a better educational system.

Q: You’ve led the effort to make some reforms to board policies in terms of how the board itself operates and how board members communicate. Why?
A: You can’t have a board that’s going in five different directions. It’s basically about communication and information. … Trying to be more efficient — everybody knows everything. That’s what it’s all about.

Q: Why vote for you?
A: I’d like to tell you cause I’m the only candidate on the ballot. If they want to write somebody in, they can do that. But I think that for consistency and continued forward direction and my experience in administration and education.
