Students turn out for Malverne College Day

Malverne High School joined forces with Howard T. Herber Middle School to host the district’s annual College Day, which included a host of events to provide students from grades five through 12 with useful tools to help them take meaningful steps on the road to a successful college career.

At the middle school, students went on a “college road trip” in the gymnasium. Sixth graders were asked to research a specific college and create a display filled with facts, such as cost, size, admissions requirements, housing, average SAT scores, sports, clubs and more. They took their displays to the gymnasium, which was divided into streets named Application Way, Determination Lane, Scholarship Way and University Highway.

Fifth graders then set off to visit each college, collecting information much the same way they would on a real college road trip. In their classrooms, students played College Bingo, matching colleges with their logos. There was also a special workshop conducted by the Hartt School, the performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford. Members of the school’s 20/20 Brass Ensemble performed and answered questions about their college experience as music majors.

One of the main events for both schools was a college fair that gave students from grades seven through 12 an opportunity to speak one-on-one with admissions officers from a host of private universities, SUNY schools and community colleges. While at the college fair, students were able to view a wall adorned with profiles of all their teachers, including information about which schools they attended and which factors influenced their college decisions. It proved to be one of the favorite stops for students from both schools. The high school also hosted classroom presentations conducted by representatives from the CUNY schools.
