Village adopts $15.2 million budget

The Malverne village board unanimously adopted its $15.2 million preliminary 2012-13 budget last week — an increase of $832,000 over the current spending plan. The budget’s tax levy increase is 2.63 percent.

The April 16 adoption was quick, with the village board approving the spending plan — one that will maintain all programs and services, though residents will be paying a bit more in taxes.

Mayor Patricia McDonald noted that $12.2 million will be raised through property taxes and just under $3 million through revenues. Approximately $845,000 of the village’s $2.2 million in reserves will be used to minimize the tax increase. Based on a projected tax rate of $63.92 per $100 of assessed valuation, said Deputy Mayor Joe Hennessy, the village’s budget director, the average homeowner will pay $98 more in taxes next year.

“I’m pleased it was adopted because it’s necessary to continue services,” Hennessy said after the meeting. “This is a prudent budget. It’s not that much of an increase, and we did this to the best of our ability.”

The 2012-13 budget will take effect June 1.
