West Hempstead man charged for car accident in Baldwin

Nassau County police have arrested and charged a 39-year-old West Hempstead man that was involved in a two-car accident, which occurred on March 13 at 10:14 p.m. in Baldwin.

According to detectives, a Nissan sedan with three occupants was stopped at a red traffic signal on Grand Avenue at Milburn Ave. The vehicle was then struck in the rear by a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Roy Gomez, of 26 Archer Rd in West Hempstead. Gomez then drove away from the scene only to park a few blocks away and ran on foot. At approximately 3:30 a.m., subsequent to a police investigation, Gomez was located sleeping in a boat on Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport, and arrested without further incident. All three occupants from the Nissan were transported to area hospitals. Detectives had reported that a 65-year-old male passenger sustained serious injuries, the female driver and a backseat male passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries.

On March 14, the rear passenger, Jovanni Bien-Aime, 21, of Baldwin, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at about 7:23 p.m. by a Nassau University Medical Center physician.

Gomez was charged with assault, vehicular assault, DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated unlicensed operation. He was arraigned on Wednesday at 1st District Court in Hempstead.
