Updated: 5:15 p.m., Sept. 9, 2011: An eastbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a New Jersey man at the Merrick train station just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau County police were on hand to investigate with LIRR officials. more

At press time, Hurricane Irene was still barreling toward Long Island, forcing Bellmore-Merrick residents south of Merrick Road to evacuate, as per an order from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

At midday on Saturday, many Bellmore-Merrick residents living south of Merrick Road were seen packing up their belongings and piling into their vehicles, headed to higher ground ahead of Hurricane Irene, as per the mandatory evacuation order issued by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano on Friday.
