Last week, President Obama and Governor Cuomo gave their annual addresses on the nation and state, and both focused a good portion of their speeches on education. While both placed a heavy emphasis on charter schools, they were far apart on other issues.

Bellmore-Merrick homeowners began appearing from their snow-covered homes and digging out as light broke over a virtually pure-white landscape on Tuesday.
A severe winter storm dumped 10 to 14 inches of snow on Bellmore-Merrick from the early morning on Jan. 26 to Jan. 27, with winds whipping across the community at 25 to 35 miles per hour and drifts reaching two to three feet.

On Oct. 21, 1982, Democrat Mario Cuomo, then a candidate for governor of New York, was campaigning furiously on Long Island. Among his stops was WGBB radio, on Landsdowne Avenue in Merrick, where he debated Lewis Lehrman, his Republican-Conservative opponent and an investment banker.
Richard Kessel, a native Merokean whom Cuomo later named executive director of the New York State Consumer Protection Board, was there that day. He had lunch with Cuomo afterward.

Nassau County voters will choose their next district attorney in November 2015, ten months after current D.A. Kathleen Rice leaves the post for a seat in Congress. Meanwhile, Rice’s top deputy or an appointee of Gov. Andrew Cuomo will take the reins as the county’s head prosecutor.
