A very Viking homecoming celebration

Posted

Viking green washed across the streets of Seaford on Saturday for the high school’s Homecoming festivities.

Residents of all ages participated in the Seaford High School Homecoming celebration, which included a parade, football game and halftime show. The Vikings cruised to a 34-6 victory over the William Tresper Clarke High School Rams, to the delight of fans who flocked to the stands on a sunny and crisp fall afternoon.

Two hours before the players hit the gridiron, community members marched in a parade designed to celebrate the high school and all-things Seaford. Marchers stepped off from the Seaford Public Library, on Jackson Avenue, at noon.

The theme of this year’s parade was “New York, New York,” according to the district.  Setting a new tradition, each high school class created a banner in place of a float. Members of each class marched in the parade behind each banner, which were judged; the winner was announced during halftime.

John Phillips, a National Lacrosse hall of famer who Seaford School District officials said has volunteered countless hours of his time to coaching Seaford’s lacrosse and football programs, was the grand marshal of the parade. He was also honored on the football field, along with two of Seaford’s finest lacrosse players — Molly VanDusen and Ally Palermo, All-American athletes.

After the parade, the Booster Club sold Viking apparel and refreshments near the field. For the pre-game ceremony, the Vikings rushed onto the grass alongside youngsters from the Long Island Broncos football organization.

In addition to the gridiron matchup, students and residents in attendance were entertained by a half-time show, featuring performances by three cheerleading squads, the Marching Band and Color Guard. The Homecoming king and queen —Josh Pinnock and Pamela Franco, respectively — and their courts were also honored.
