Water company urging residents to conserve water during heat wave

Amid the current heat wave, New York American Water is urging residents to follow Nassau County’s odd/even lawn sprinkling guidelines to conserve water owing to the vastly increased demand caused by daily temperatures in excess of 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

“During the extreme temperatures we have been facing for the past two weeks, we are directing residents to do everything they can in order to conserve water,” said Brian Bruce, NYAW vice president of operations. “Water systems across Long Island are designed and constructed to meet the community’s maximum daily water demand. However, the intense upsurge in demand that we have been experiencing in the current heat wave is putting a strain on our groundwater wells, resulting in some areas seeing reduced water pressure.”

Nassau County’s odd/even lawn sprinkling guidelines are as follows: homeowners with even numbered street addresses may sprinkle their lawns on even numbered calendar days between midnight to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to midnight. Home addresses without street numbers must follow guidelines for even calendar days. Houses with odd numbers addresses may sprinkle on odd numbered calendar days between midnight to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to midnight.
