More than 100 students from Birch and Chatterton elementary schools in the Merrick District recently took part in the National Foreign Languages Week poster and essay contest, and first-place winners were announced last week. This year’s theme was “Languages Make the World Go ’Round.”

“The students were extremely creative,” said Jackie Ram, who teaches Spanish at Birch and Chatterton. “They made mobiles, globes, and some wrote thought-provoking essays about the importance of learning foreign languages.”

The Merrick School District offers Spanish in grades three to six.
