Calhoun Sports Boosters Association honors Athletes of the Month

Posted

The Calhoun High School Sports Boosters Association recently named its Athletes of the Month for October. They are Colts football quarterback Matt Brennan and swimmer Gabbie Toback.

Matt Brennan

Calhoun football coach Joe Bianca described senior Matt Brennan as committed to the Colt football program –– the first one on the field for practice and the last one off. In his senior year, he served as the Colts’ captain. Brennan plans to continue playing football in college, has been offered a scholarship to Bryant University and is exploring his college options.

Gabbie Toback

Junior Gabbie Toback has been a member of the Bellmore-Merrick District swim team for the past five years. During that time, she has earned All-County honors a number of times and set several school records. Only a junior, Toback qualified for the state championships in ninth, 10th and 11th grades. She also finished this past season as division and county champion in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, qualifying for the state championships in both events.

Her backstroke time is not only a new school record, but also earned her All-American consideration. She also swam on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, which also garnered division and county championship titles, with the 200 freestyle team setting a new county record.

Toback’s accomplishments also helped the Sharks finish second in the county championship, the best placement in the team’s history.
