Celebrating Mother's Day around Long Island

Make Mother’s Day a memorable one for Mom. Beyond the flowers and cards, take her on an outing that all can enjoy. Here are some suggestions for spending the day with mom.

Old Westbury Gardens
Enchant mom with a relaxing Mother’s Day weekend outing to Old Westbury Gardens. Stroll the 200 beautiful acres of wooded walks, meadows, lakes, and those amazing gardens bursting forth with their glorious blooms. Visit Westbury House, the estate’s 100 year old Charles II style mansion, filled with priceless art and furnishings. Pack a picnic lunch for a delightful picnic among spring’s vibrant colors (or visit the Cafe in the Woods).
Bring the kids on Saturday, May 8, for a bouquet project workshop. They can create a special floral gift for mom or Grandma, at 11 a.m. Later that day, enjoy “Paris in the Springtime” with Poetica Musica. Now in their 16th year as Artists-in-Residence at Old Westbury Gardens, Poetica Musica’s 8 p.m. Red Ballroom performance is preceded by a guided tour of Westbury House or the gardens at 6:45 p.m. and a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m. Works by Faure, Gaubert, Roussel, and Debussy are featured. The concert is followed by a Meet-the-Artists reception.
On Sunday, May 9, enjoy a stroll in the charming and fragrant Lilac Walk, led by Old Westbury Gardens’ docents, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Mom will be transported by the beauty and fragrance of these historic and fascinating plants. Be sure to stop by the Plant Shop. Each Mom – actually all female visitors 18 and and older – receives a free plant on Mother’s Day.
