Declaration reading set for Fourth of July

The Historical Society of the Merricks will hold its annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence this year on the Fourth of July. The reading will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Merrick gazebo, at Merrick Avenue north of Sunrise Highway.

Participants each will read one sentence from the Declaration to celebrate the form in which news of the document spread through the colonies in 1776. The group has celebrated the Fourth of July in this way since it began in 1976.

Participants will be given free copies of the text as well as refreshments. The event will take place rain or shine and last for about an hour. Children with their caregivers are welcome.
