Empire Company extinguishes July 3 yard fire

The Merrick Fire Department’s Empire Hose Company No. 3 responded to a yard fire that burned off a good section of the homeowner’s lawn on July 3 around 5:30 p.m., according to fire officials.
A Nassau County Police helicopter pilot spotted the fire from above and reported it to the department, which sent a pumper truck and ambulance to the Chernucha Avenue home, just south of Merrick Road. The helicopter circled several times above south Merrick before finally flying off.
A half-dozen firefighters needed only minutes to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.
