Friends of Levy Preserve group to meet on June 26

Posted

The Friends of the Levy Preserve Committee will host a one-hour tour of the Town of Hempstead’s Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick on Thursday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. Meet in the parking lot.

Mike McConnell, Hempstead’s deputy parks commissioner, will answer questions.

Jay Pitti, acting chairman of the friends group, said, “Understandably, the preserve was closed frequently during the winter due to the snow cover and iced trails. All trails, however, are now fine. The tour gives members a great opportunity to view the current status of the preserve and enjoy a summer evening with nature.”

In the event of bad weather, the friends group will hold a meeting in the nearby Department of Sanitation’s conference room.

The 50-acre preserve, a former landfill, is now home to Nigerian dwarf goats and Guinea hens, and offers trails for hiking and jogging and canals for kayaking.
