Summer Sounds

Long Island Philharmonic
Those glorious sounds of the Long Island Philharmonic make their way to Eisenhower Park, as the orchestra delights fans with a free summer concert. Music Director David Stewart Wiley leads his orchestra in an all-American program, highlighting John Philip Sousa and popular Broadway and Hollywood tunes. The program includes Sousa’s “The Liberty Bell” and “Hail to the Spirit of Liberty,” John Williams’ “A Prayer for Peace” (from the film “Munich”), Meredith Wilson’s “Seventy-Six Trombones,” and more.
Friday, July 5, 7:30 p.m. Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, East Meadow (631) 293-2222 or www.liphilharmonic.org.

On Stage

Ruddigore
The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company welcomes summer with a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “supernatural” opera, “Ruddigore,” or The Witch’s Curse. The show features a full cast and the acclaimed 18-piece Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra. The story is a parody of stock melodrama: the villain who carries off the maiden, the priggishly good-mannered poor-but-virtuous-heroine, the hero in disguise, etc. Gilbert’s satire remains sharp and pertinent as it pokes fun at the aristocracy and the relationships between them and their servants and local folk.
Saturday, July 6, 8 p.m. $25, $20 seniors and students. Jeanne Rimsky Theater at Landmark on Main Street, 232 Main St., Port Washington. (516) 229-1427 or www.gilbertandsullivanli.com.
