Merrick Fire Department marks 9/11

The Merrick Fire Department held a solemn ceremony at the Merrick firefighters’ 9/11 memorial at Sunrise Highway and Merrick Avenue on Saturday at noon to mark the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In attendance were members of the Gies family, who lost Ronnie Gies, a New York City firefighter and one-time chief of the Merrick department, in the attacks.

The Merricks’ 15 9/11 victims include Paul Battaglia, Mark Brisman, Herman Broghammer, Thomas Crotty, Ronnie Gies, David Grimner, Aram Iskendarian, James Kelly, Farrell Lynch, Sean Lynch, Thomas McHale, Katherine McGarry-Noack, Brian Sweeney, John Vaccacio and Frank Vignola.
