Merrick Woods Day Camp expanding with sleepaway camp

Posted

The Langbart family, owners of the 55-year-old Merrick Woods Country Day Camp, recently purchased a sleepaway camp, Greenwood Trails, on 100 acres in Winsted, Conn., at the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.

Greenwood Trails occupies the site of the original Camp Delaware, one of the nation’s early summer camps, which was founded in 1921. The Langbart family has retained the services of many of the Camp Delaware management and staff in order to provide a "seamless transition." This winter, the property underwent extensive renovation. New sports courts (including a new skate park, tennis courts, hockey court and more) were added, and the pool, pool deck, cabins and other facilities were upgraded.

Campers can attend for two, four or six weeks. In addition, families sending their children to Merrick Woods or other day-camp programs can add a two-week sleepaway experience, enabling their children to experience overnight camping for the first time in a "moderate way." Greenwood Trails also has a special program for first-time overnight campers to help ease the transition and make new campers feel relaxed and comfortable.

Greenwood Trails offers a "Choose Your Own Trail" program, which allows all campers to select from a wide range of sports, arts, waterfront and adventure activities, on a weekly and daily basis. This enables campers to focus on areas of interest to them, as well as explore new activities on a short-term basis, helping to build skills and confidence while also having fun.

The Langbart family says Greenwood Trails is committed to four core values: respect, integrity, caring and courage.

There is still space available for new campers, ages 8 to 16, to attend Greenwood Trails this summer. For more information, visit the camp’s website at: www.GreenwoodTrails.com or call (516) 483.7272 or e-mail owen@greenwoodtrails.com.
