N. Merrick Library at last renovating bathrooms

Posted

The North Merrick Library recently began renovation work on two public bathrooms. The project is expected to be completed within the month, said library Director Tom Witt in a press release.

The library is taking advantage of grant money that it received through a New York State Library Construction Aid Program to pay for the renovations.

According to Witt, the library applied for and was funded $21,509 through the program. The project was put out to bid and awarded to the Artusa & Artusa Construction Company. In total, it will cost $68,000.

Built in 1956, the North Merrick Public Library was originally erected to serve as an elementary school. The bathrooms that are being renovated were built to accommodate elementary school children, with sinks and fixtures installed at a height to accommodate the youngsters. The bathrooms have remained virtually unchanged since their construction, Witt said.

Upon completion, the renovated bathrooms will include stalls that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as standard height sinks.

Recently, library officials announced a proposal to renovate and expand other parts of the library, including the roof, windows and boiler. The plan is subject to a public vote.
