North Merrick Library plans technology education day

Posted

Adults, teens and children who love computer technology, or who want to better understand how to use it, might consider stopping by the North Merrick Public Library, at 1691 Meadowbrook Road, on Saturday, Jan. 10.

As part of the library’s continued participation in “Geek the Library,” a national campaign to raise awareness about and passion for local libraries that the Online Computer Library Center, Inc. launched last year with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, there will be a series of technology-related programs throughout the day on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the discussion will focus on online social networks — including the latest and most popular sites — and provide information about privacy and security. A computer is not necessary for the seminar.

Two afternoon sessions — one from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for third- to sixth-grade children, the other from 3 to 5 p.m. for teens in seventh grade and up — are planned for young people to have fun with video game design. Computers will be available.

Additionally, the library invites residents to bring their laptops or mobile devices during the day on Saturday for answers to questions about their use. Finally, the library invites those who do not yet own computing devices to come test out the library’s technology and learn about email, online social networking, Google Docs and more. More information is available by calling the library at (516) 378-7474. Patrons of all Bellmore-Merrick areas libraries are welcome at the event.

Correction:

The print version of this article, which appeared on page 5 of the January 8-14 Merrick Herald Life, incorrectly stated the date of the library's technology day. It will take place on Jan. 10, not Jan. 20. We regret the error.
