Off to the races at Mepham High's Paul Limmer Invitational

The Mepham, Calhoun and Kennedy track and field teams recently competed in the sixth annual Paul Limmer Pirate Track and Field Invitational at Mepham High School in Bellmore.

Even with rainy weather, about 1,000 student-athletes from 30 schools took part in the invitational, according to Dave Frazer, the Mepham track and field coach. The event comprised a variety of races and events, with each school gaining an cumulative score throughout the day. This year, Bellmore and Merrick reigned supreme, with Calhoun placing first for the girls, and Mepham taking first for the boys.

The invitational is named for Paul Limmer, who coached the Mepham track and field team from 1969 to 1999. “He was a very successful coach,” said Frazer.

All proceeds from the event go to Mepham High School and are used to purchase new equipment for the track and field team.

“The idea is to show off our community,” said Frazer, “not just the track and field community, but different businesses that sponsors us, and the different clubs. It’s just to give a sense of what our school is and what the community is.”
