Record high turnout for Central District's post-prom party

Posted

Bellmore-Merrick Central District proms might have ended around midnight last Thursday, but more seniors than ever headed over to Zachary's in East Meadow to keep on dancing through the night. The third annual post-prom party, hosted by the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council, attracted 270 seniors and their dates this year, compared with 200 last year and 120 in the event's first year.

Wellness Council Executive Director Fran Licausi said that she had anticipated the high turnout from the Central District's three high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham. Owing to the event's growing success, Licausi added that she will likely have students sign up in advance for the party in the coming years.

The Wellness Council created the post-prom party, which is free to seniors and their dates, as an option for students looking for a fun, safe after-prom event, done in an alcohol- and drug-free environment. As was the case in previous years, there was a DJ and lots of prizes for the students to win. The big tickets items, like televisions and laptops, topped the list. New to the party this year was a photo booth and money cube — a booth where fake money was blown around and students were able to catch the money for the chance to win prizes like iTunes cards and gift certificates.

A magician/illusionist was also there as part of the entertainment. He's been at the event in previous years, and students continue to enjoy him. "He's very good; the kids really like him," Licausi said.

Licausi, who has students fill out a survey, said that she received only positive feedback. "Everyone had a great time; the kids really enjoyed themselves," she said.
