Remembering Frank Soling, civic group activist

Franklin Soling of Merrick died recently at the age of 80. His memory is carried on by his loving family and the Merrick community, which he served passionately.

Soling, "Frank" to most, is remembered by his wife, Marlene, daughter Lori Walsh and her husband, Peter. He is described as a devoted father to his late son Mark and father-in-law to Mark's widow Marcia. He was also the proud grandfather of Benjamin and Steven

"The original SMCCA member," as Soling was described by South Merrick Community Civic Association President Joe Baker, played an active role in shaping the Merrick community. Soling was a charter member of SMCCA and went on to become the organization's executive vice president.

"At our very first meeting, he walked in and said, 'Hi, my name is Frank, and I'd like to get involved,'" Baker recalled. "He genuinely wanted to help improve the community. That was his goal."

Soling also played an instrumental role on the Board of the Historical Society of the Merricks as both the recording and corresponding secretary. He is credited with originating the group's 2009 Community Old Fashioned Tea Party and designing a computer inventory program that, according to Historical Society President Lawrence Garfinkel, kept the society viable.

"We basked in the strength of his personality -- somber and serious when required and then a warm smile and sparkle when that was called for," Garfinkel said. "Frank Soling leaves a model for many of us who have a love for the Merricks but who also need to step up and make our future history a living entity."

In June, Soling was honored with SMCCA's Community Service Award for his work with both organizations.

"He was just so appreciative," said Baker, who developed a strong friendship with Soling during their four years working together through SMCCA. "He was just so happy that day; he cried, it was very touching."
