Students get healthy at Calhoun fair

Posted

The Calhoun High School gymnasium was a abuzz on Friday morning as students by the dozen strolled from station to station, learning how to live healthy.

Calhoun’s fifth annual Health Fair, organized by health teacher Keri Cinelli, attracted businesses from throughout the Bellmores and Merricks and beyond, offering lessons on physical activities ranging from rock climbing to yoga, as well as samples of wholesome foods from salads and wraps to yogurt with fresh fruit. There was even an egg-white omelet station.

Both the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center and the Community Wellness Council were represented at the fair. The Parent Center had a videogame that helped to illustrate the dangers of driving while intoxicated. Students played the game normally and then gave it a try with a pair of “drunk” glasses, which are specially designed to demonstrate how one perceives the road when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Student volunteers, calling themselves “Team Cinelli” in honor of their health teacher, ran the fair. Cinelli said the objective of the much-anticipated event was to show students “that they don’t have to live in a gym to eat right and be healthy.”
