Three elected fire commissioners in North Merrick

Voters in the North Merrick Fire District went to the polls on Tuesday, Dec. 10, to elect three members of the five-member North Merrick Fire Department Board of Commissioners. They returned to office one long-serving incumbent, Scott Rockwin, in an unopposed election, and they chose newcomers Gregory Smith and Joseph Vicario for vacant seats. Smith eked out election over his opponent, Scott Sabel, by five votes.

Rockwin claimed 322 votes. Smith captured 200 votes to Sabel’s 195, or 50.6 percent of the vote to 49.4 percent. Vicario received 250 votes, and his opponent, Oscar Thompson, 183 votes, or 57.7 percent of the vote and 42.3 percent.
