Mary Poppins
Everyone’s favorite nanny is back on stage, in Plaza Theatrical Productions’ appealing version of the popular story. Based on P.L. Travers’ cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney Film, “Mary Poppins” is an enchanting mixture of the timeless tale and unforgettable songs that keep everyone humming long after they leave the performance. Believe in the magic of Mary Poppins and visit a world where anything can happen. East Rockaway’s Denis Murphy portrays Mr. Banks, the head of the Banks household, who tries to be a good provider, but often forgets how to be a good husband and father. A teacher at Kellenberg High School, he frequently performs in Plaza’s shows. Joseph Anthony, of Freeport, is also featured as the charismatic chimney sweep Bert.
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.; also Aug. 15-16 and Aug. 22-23. $12. Long Island Children’s Museum, Museum Row, Garden City. (516) 599-6870 or www.plazatheatrical.com.

Taste on the Beach
The City by the Sea is in film festival mode, courtesy of the Long Beach International Film Festival. “Shorts On the Beach,” now an annual summertime event, offers a preview of what is to come during September’s Long Beach International Film Festival. The film screening, held on the beach between National Boulevard and Edwards Boulevard, also includes “Taste on the Beach” this year, a sampling of cuisine and drinks from local restaurants, wineries and craft breweries. The intimate beachside theater setting also includes performances by Benoir, Michelle Medoff, Mark Newman, and Oogee Wawa.
The program will open with the Oscar-winning short “Feast” from Walt Disney Animation. Additional animated shorts include “Deep End” from Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and “Bear Story,” a Chilean computer animated short (considered one of the best this year), among the other films being screened.
Friday, Aug. 7. “Taste on the Beach” begins at 6 p.m., 9 p.m. film screening. Tickets required. National Boulevard and Edwards Boulevard, Long Beach. Visit www.longbeachfilm.com for schedule and ticket information.
