Laura Burak, of Bellmore, tried to restrain her excited bearded collie, Cooper, at the Purple Heart Pups 3K fundraising walk in Merrick last Saturday. The National Amputation Foundation, based in Malverne, participated in the event, which raised funds for veteran amputees and service dogs.

The National Amputation Foundation, a Malverne-based nonprofit that caters to amputee veterans, join the Purple Heart Pups on May 7 for a 3K walk to raise funds for veterans.
Dozens of people and dogs came out to participate in the walk at the Four Towns Firefighter Training Center. The event, which was held for the second consecutive year, featured musical performances and a raffle.
