Nassau County Police blocked off the corner of Bernard Street and Beach Drive in south Merrick on Sunday, Dec. 1, around 11 a.m. after a water main break sent water spewing onto local streets. An officer at the scene said to avoid the corner because officials feared the break could cause a sinkhole to form in the street. Water had already forced up a section of asphalt and split it into sections.
At press time, there was no word on what caused the break or when the water main might be repaired.
