Island Park asks police to look at intersection

Increased accidents create safety concerns

At the Village Board of Trustees meeting on Sept. 20, Island Park Mayor James Ruzicka announced that he asked the Nassau County Police Department to look into the increased pedestrian accidents that have occurred at the intersection of Long Beach Road and Warwick Road.

According to Ruzicka, the Island Park Fire Department responded to three separate pedestrian accidents — when a pedestrian or bicyclist is hit by a car — during the last weeks of the summer. None of the people hit were killed, but the intersection has still become a concern for Ruzicka.

“We hope the county can look at the intersection and do something with the signals,” he said.

The intersection has a pedestrian crossing signal directly in front of Village Hall so pedestrians can safely cross the intersection east to west. But the north to south sides have no light.

Ruzicka said he asked the NCPD to investigate the intersection and see if there’s anything that could be done to increase pedestrian safety.

“I don’t know what kind of controls [the police could add],” said Ruzicka. “Maybe a ‘Don’t Walk’ sign has to be put up. Something like that. Something a little more noticeable.”
