Storms, Floods the new normal

With another storm Long Islanders are again facing flooding. We are looking to government to install back flow valves, improve sewers, raise and repair streets, and help raise and mitigate their homes. That may be of no avail according to the Director and Associate Professor of the Environmental Studies Program at Adelphi University, Dr. Beth A. Christensen. She says global warming, coupled with the melting ice sheet over the Arctic may be contributing to the increased height of our water table.

"You can safely assure your readers that this is an ongoing problem with little solution other than building up walls and reducing greenhouse gases. We are now in the 'get used to it' phase of coastal living. It's only now that we are reaching a point of no return in terms of how it impacts our daily lives. Climate change is happening now, and they are living with the consequences," she said. "This is only the very beginning of some very serious climate change."
