Open since November 2009, Da Nicola brings exceptional cuisine to Hewlett. Chef/owner Nicola 'Nick' Scarcella credits his culinary flair to his European-born family, especially his grandmother. While many of his Italian dishes are old world, others bring a contemporary twist. At Da Nicola, there is something for every penchant and palate.

Located at the site that once housed Rafters, Da Nicola promises a comfortable dining experience. Its decor blends elegance with cozy chalet charm. What could be better on a blustery winter night than a scrumptious meal and a blazing fireplace? And manager Rob Disanto and his congenial staff are extremely accommodating, taking the time to know their clientele.

There's a full bar, ample menu, and at least 10 specials each night. Portions are generous. On the dinner menu, soups, salads and appetizers are $5.95 to $10.95. Entrees range from $11.95 to $18.85, with the exception of steaks and chops, which are market price, so may vary. Most include vegetables, and some, potatoes too. Desserts are $5.95 to $7.95. Children can be accommodated.

Warm rustic bread arrived promptly with beverages. Onion soup made with six varieties, dotted with goat cheese, was superb. Goat cheese salad included baby greens, dried cranberries, walnuts and a savory vinaigrette. Wedge salad and iceberg lettuce and tomatoes was made special by it creamy gorgonzola dressing specked with real bacon. Baked clams and shrimp Oreganata were as they should be, and hold onto the bread to dip into their garlicky sauce. Grilled octopus was tender and flavorful, served over arugula.
