DeCarlo named Oceanside principal

Geraldine DeCarlo, who has been an associate principal at Oceanside High School for the last 10 years, was appointed the school’s new principal by the school board at a meeting on July 16.

DeCarlo, 62, of Franklin Square, succeeds Principal Mark Secaur, who has been at the helm of the school for eight years, and will leave the Oceanside system on Aug. 1 to become the deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction in Hewlett-Woodmere.

“DeCarlo offers stability, continuity and deep knowledge of OHS, its students and staff,” said Donna Krauss, the spokeswoman for the school district.

Gregory Sloan was appointed DeCarlo’s replacement as associate principal. Sloan was previously the director of guidance.

DeCarlo began her full-time career in education as a business education teacher in Valley Stream in 1988, and she became the department head in 1997. She also served as the principal of the district’s summer school program. She moved to Oceanside in 2003, when she became associate principal of the high school.

She holds a state certificate as a school administrator and supervisor, and another as a school district administrator.

Krauss added that the district’s newly appointed superintendent, Phyllis Harrington, and the school board plan to find a replacement for Sloan as well as for Associate Principal Fred Koller, who recently announced his retirement, before the school year begins in September.

“I didn’t expect, in my first hour as superintendent, to be replacing our high school principal,” said Harrington, “but after speaking with people and getting their input and speaking with Mrs. Decarlo and Mr. Sloan, we are set up for a wonderful journey. They are solid people, committed to the Oceanside schools.”
