Steamed about lack of response

To the Editor:

This past week, the crossing gates at the Oceanside train station were stuck in the down position for over 30 minutes.

I called it in and was told the crews were en route. The crew arrived, looked at the switch panel and drove off. Cars then began to breach the crossing. Fearing for someone's life, I began to direct traffic, while calling 911. "No one's asking you to direct traffic, sir," said the 911 operator after I complained about the lack of police presence. Yes, he actually said that! I suppose he didn't care if someone was killed or not.

I called 911 again a few minutes later, and was told police were on the way. I then called the NCPD 4th precinct directly, and was told (again), "They're on the way."

After 10 minutes more I decided to leave. Still no police. Does closing down massage parlors in Oceanside deserve more attention than saving lives at a railroad crossing? I think not.
