The Long Beach Medical Center celebrated its 87th anniversary with a gala event entertaining more than 300 friends and supporters who raised $212,000 for patient care services at the hospital, on Oct. 17.

The Autumn Ball is LBMC’s major fundraising event and is celebrated annually to commemorate new and outstanding achievements at the medical center. During the event, the medical center’s Board of Trustees honored A. Scott Horak, vice president of R & J Construction Corporation of Island Park, a leading provider of drywall, carpentry and acoustical ceiling systems in the five boroughs and Long Island. The Board recognized Horak for his contributions to youth programs in Long Beach and his involvement in medical research through the Muscular Dystrophy’s Wings Over Wall Street initiative.

“Mr. Horak is an astute businessman,” said James Portnof, chairman of the dinner committee. “He is also a generous individual who gives back to his community.”

At the dinner, the LBMC’s Board of Trustees also announced the establishment of its new military treatment program for active and retired military personnel, the dedication of the physical medicine and rehabilitation center in memory of John “Bebe” Cullen, the dedication of the emergency department waiting room in honor of Maxine and James Portnof, and the construction of its new chronic dialysis center.
