Longtime Oceanside resident Maxine Ruth Ebert died on Feb. 2 at a nursing home in Virginia Beach, Va., of complications from falling twice two weeks after Thanksgiving. She was 94.

Ebert lived at a retirement home in Norfolk. Va., the city where one of her two sons, Bruce, lives.

A native of Brooklyn, Maxine married Daniel Ebert in 1947, and worked beside him in the wholesale clothing business he started for many years.

Maxine was active in the community. For several years, she was a member of the local chapter of Women’s American ORT, a volunteer organization that sought to promote vocational training for displaced Jews in Eastern Europe. A piano player, she once performed in a talent show at Steinway Hall in Brooklyn. As a wife and mother, she was an archetypal 1950s and ‘60s “Oceanside mom,” driving her children to various events, checking their homework, serving as a Little League booster, wardrobe consultant and band-aid dispenser — among many other things.

The Eberts made their home on Derby Drive South, near Oaks School No. 3, in Oceanside, for nearly 40 years. In 2000, Maxine and Daniel moved to Florida, eventually settling in Highland Beach.

Daniel predeceased Maxine in 2000. In addition to Bruce, Maxine is survived by her other son, Robert (Colette); her grandson, Jeffrey; her granddaughters Nicole (Nicholas), Michelle (Michael) and Lindsay; and her great-granddaughters Olivia and Jordan.

Her memorial service was held on Feb. 7 at Gutterman’s Funeral Home, in Rockville Centre, the day after a graveside service near Boca Raton, Fla.
