Mary E. Bombara, a former principal of School 3 in Oceanside, died on March 11. She was 87.

Mary was born in Far Rockaway on March 6, 1925. She graduated from St. Mary’s Star of the Seas elementary school and Our Lady of Wisdom Academy in Ozone Park. She received a B.S. in education from Queens College and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from New York University.

She began her teaching career in the Oceanside Public Schools teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grades at School 3. She eventually became principal at School 8 where she remained until her retirement in 1984.

Mary was dearly loved by her students, faculty and the parents in the community.

She was an active member in St. Anthony’s Parish, volunteering her services to the church and school. She was a member of the St. Anthony’s school board prior to the closing of the school.

She was a Pink Lady at South Nassau Communities Hospital and at Mease Dunedin Hosptial in Florida, where she spent 25 winters enjoying her life.

After retirement, Mary worked with

student teachers attending Molloy College. She imbued in them a love of children and teaching.

Mary is survived by her loving sister Tess Zarba, nephews Christopher and Peter Zarba, and nieces Mary Camille Zarba, Regina Thiemann, Rosemary Zarba and Theresa Kenny, as well as many cousins and friends.
