Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Anthony J. Santino unveiled the township’s latest streetscape beautification project in downtown Oceanside. The project includes the installation of new concrete walkways, brick paving stones, decorative Victorian lighting and new trash receptacles on the west side of Long Beach Road between Tilrose Avenue and Poole Street.

“Beautifying our downtowns is a welcome addition to our commercial areas for residents, business owners and shoppers,” Murray said. “This busy thoroughfare in Oceanside will certainly benefit from these enhancements.”

A large portion of the $380,000 Oceanside streetscape project was funded through money secured by New York State Senator Dean Skelos, as well as federal funds. Skelos provided $500,000 to Hempstead Town for streetscape improvements, including the Oceanside project.

“I was pleased to provide funding to the Town of Hempstead that will help revitalize our business district on Long Beach Road in Oceanside,” Skelos said. “This project will enhance our community for residents and existing businesses and most importantly, help to attract new businesses to our downtown that will create jobs.”

Most recently, the town completed a similar project on the east side of Long Beach Road, in front of Mio Posto restaurant. Additional town efforts focused on upgrading Oceanside’s downtown have included streetscape enhancements on Davison Avenue, large sections of the east and west sides of Long Beach Road and portions of Lawson Boulevard, as well as the refurbishment of commuter parking lots near the Oceanside train station. The town was also the force behind ridding Oceanside of the reviled Oceanside Motel years ago, replacing it with a much-needed commuter parking area. Finally, Murray and Santino attracted “Wild by Nature” and other businesses to this bustling business district.

“Oceanside is enjoying the benefits of this streetscape beautification project,” said Murray. “This serves as another fine example of how Hempstead Town is working to improve the quality of life for its residents.”
