Oceanside lost on offense

Oceanside’s scoreless drought reached four games and its winless streak five with a 1-0 home defeat to defending Nassau Class AA boys’ soccer champion Massapequa on Oct. 8.

Dan Herrera notched the only goal of the night a little more than midway through the opening half from 30 yards out to provide the difference for the Chiefs, who bumped the Sailors to last place in Conference AA-I.

“None of the games we’re losing are blowouts,” coach Chuck Phelan said after Oceanside saw its record slip to 1-4-2 in conference play and 3-4-3 overall. “The games we lost by two goals, the second goals came with under five minutes to go and with us pressing for the tie. We just haven’t been able to score. It’s probably the longest stretch we’ve gone without a goal.”

The Sailors last celebrated a goal in the first half of a loss at Port Washington on Sept. 26 when senior defender Joe Mayer found the net. They were blanked by Hicksville and Farmingdale to close out the month and opened October with another shutout, albeit they earned a point by battling Syosset to a scoreless tie. Junior goalkeeper David Epstein made five saves for his first shutout.

“The Syosset game was encouraging,” said Phelan, who noted the tremendous defensive efforts of Mayer and senior Vinny Aniano. “We didn’t finish but we totally outplayed them.

“We’re a little too much dump and run right now,” he added. “We have to be more supportive when we’re on the attack.”
