Computer Darkroom

Learn how to download, retouch, and manipulate digital photographs using common applications like Microsoft Word. Please bring a digital camera and a USB cable to class. Please note: this is not a course on how to take digital photographs. The fee for the course, which will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. on Jan. 19 and Jan. 26, is $20.


Basic Computer Skills
Designed for beginners, this workshop covers basic computer skills and operations including mouse skills, keyboard techniques, surfing the Internet, and file management applications like saving and retrieving files. The fee for the course, which will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 26 and Feb. 6, 9 and 16, is $50.

Political commentator Barbara Krupit leads an informative discussion of headline news stories on Jan. 20 from 1:30 - 3 p.m.
Creative Writing Workshop: Discovering the Writer Within
Instructor Barbara Novack invites writers of all levels to stretch their creativity on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.


Workshop: Social Networking for Work and Business
Audrey Rogers of The Women’s Financial Group will demonstrate how to create dynamic profiles using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Registration is required.


Jewish Songwriters
Through stories and song, vocalist Merilee Kaufman will highlight the musical contributions made by Jewish-American composers and lyricists, including Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Richard Rogers and George Gershwin, at 2 p.m. on Jan. 27. Tickets, which are limited to two per person, will be available to residents in the Oceanside School District on Jan. 17. Tickets will be available to non-residents Jan. 20.


“Rome Around Italy”
Photographer and Oceanside resident Dr. Jeffrey Herzlich debuts his panoramic photography exhibit at the Oceanside Library now through February 2010. In this exhibit, Herzlich details the flow of life through Rome, Italy, using oversized panoramas highlighting the extensive structure, form, and beauty of ancient Italian piazzas, with modern-day people, ranging from citizens to tourists, all passing casually through them.

Preschool StoryTime
Join Ms. Meghan for free playtime followed by music, stories, rhymes, and simple craftmaking from 10:15-11:15 a.m. on Jan. 19. Register ages 3-5 in the children’s room.


Chair Yoga
Can’t get down on the floor? Try yoga on a chair with Sandye Pinz. This class, from 1-2 p.m. on Jan. 19, will provide beginning instruction and practice for people who feel they may not be flexible enough for standard yoga. Register at the circulation desk.


Stitchy Women Knitting Group
This is an informal group of knitters who get together to exchange advice on knitting projects. All experience levels are welcome to join the group from 7-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 19.


Simply Stronger
Certified trainer Marilyn Bunger will teach this low-impact exercise class from 10:15-11 a.m. on Jan. 20. Please bring hand weights and water bottles. Register at the circulation desk.


Excel 2007
Learn the basics of this spreadsheet program including creating, editing and formatting worksheets, formulas, etc. from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. The class is limited to 24 participants. Register at the circulation desk.


AARP Driver Safety Class
The fee for this class, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Jan. 23, is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. ID cards are to be presented to the instructor. Each person must provide a separate check or money order payable to AARP. Island Park residents will be given first preference. All others will be placed on a waiting list. W. Eugene Smith’s Neighborhood Revisted
The Island Park Library will host a free lecture about “LIFE” magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25. Island Park photographer Joseph Abate will give a photography presentation of Smith’s old loft neighborhood in New York City. Register for the event at the library’s circulation desk.

Oceanside Little League Baseball Registration
Parents are invited to register children ages 5-16 are invited to register for the Oceanside Little League Baseball team Jan. 21-23 at East Coast Sport, 3580 Oceanside Road. Registration is from 7-9 p.m. Jan 21 and Jan. 22, and 9 a.m. - noon Jan. 23. For more information, call Little League Commissioner Mike Levitan at 678-4312.


Fourth Annual Game Night
The Island Park Jewish Center, 191 Long Beach Road, is hosting its Fourth Annual Game Night, playing the game Facts in Five, on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Game night includes raffles, a silent auction, and food. Tickets are $25 if purchased by Jan. 15 and $35 after that or at the door. Proceeds go to the Hole in the Wall Gang and the Jewish Center. The Hole in the Wall Gang, founded by Paul Newman in 1988, is a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. Love Your Troops
The Island Park Civic Association is hosting an evening to Love Your Troops at Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, from 7-11 p.m. on Feb. 6. IPCA is teaming up with Soldiers’ Angels to collect donations and supplies for soldiers overseas. The evening will include Hors d’oeuvres, a three-course surf and turf sit-down dinner, a DJ, dancing, door prizes and raffles. Tickets are $65 per person. Egg Roll and a Show

Hollywood’s Peter Pan: The Cinema of Steven Spielberg
Throughout his life, Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg has had a cinematic vision, and a passion to tell a great story in films like “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Color Purple,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List,” and many others.
