Springtime means Little League

It’s almost spring, and that means baseball. President of the Island Park Little League, Jack Vobis, is looking for both players and sponsors for their 58th season. They have T-Ball for boys and girls ages four and five, minors and majors for boys and girls ages six through 12, and junior and senior leagues for boys and girls 13-16 year old. In addition there are three sponsorship packages, opening day, team, and trophy day. Vobis said they would also be at the Island Park Library on Feb. 14, and 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. accepting registrations. Teams need to be set by the end of this month so uniforms may be ordered.

Pat Doherty, President of the Oceanside American Little League and Tom Collins, President of the Oceanside National Little League are now working together.

“We have been operating as two separate charters in Oceanside for many, many years,” said Doherty, “This year, we are finally, organizing and running our leagues together as one!” He said both presidents as well as their respective boards of directors are all determined to unite the two Oceanside leagues for the sake of the kids. “Williamsport Little League dictates our borders as leagues. Kids who live across the street from each other and go to the same schools have not been able to play baseball together. This is something we are changing!” he went on, “We are now running both charters as Oceanside Baseball, one community! We still follow all of the Williamsport Little League rules, and the Interleague play has been a great success so far!”

Registration was in December and January, but Oceanside kids can still register by mail at:

Oceanside, NY 11572

Applications are available on www.oceansideamerican.com website, but there is no on-line registry.

“We also plan on Opening Day ceremonies which will be after the school’s spring break in April,” Doherty said.

“The guys running the clinics and all of our coaches on the field are the guys that do all the work!” We are running free indoor winter clinics for all of our kids in the school gyms,” he said, “2015 is going to be a great season for Little League in Oceanside!”

Doherty is also the Assistant District Administrator for District 30, which includes Long Beach, Rockville Centre, Island Park, East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Freeport and Baldwin.
