Temple Israel of South Merrick celebrated the Purim holiday on Sunday, March 12, by holding its annual Mel Polay Purim Carnival. Temple members and the community, many dressed in costume found numerous games, raffles, a bouncy house, face painting, cotton candy and assorted treats. A popular photo booth was rented for taking fun pictures which could then be framed as take-home souvenirs.

The carnival remains one of the most attended events at the temple. Hosted by Evelyn Polay since 1996, the carnival is dedicated to her late husband, Mel Polay.

“Evelyn is the motivating energy behind this carnival every year” said Curtis Izen, event coordinator and congregant. “Her husband really loved the carnival, the games, and the overall enthusiasm”.

Izen said Polay incorporates activities that both children and adults will enjoy. “This event is for the entire community to have fun and socialize” Izen added. “It’s not an event that’s exclusive to members only. Plenty of non-members fill the ballroom every year and it’s wonderful to have everyone come together to celebrate Purim, while seeing the attendees having an enthusiastic time.”

Immediately after the carnival, the entertainment continued as School of Rock from Rockville Center performed an amazing number of songs. All proceeds from the carnival help fund activities and programs put in place by Temple Israel of South Merrick
