Reinventing Your Career

Career Coach Diane Reynolds helps job seekers “reinvent” their careers by assessing their skills and selecting training programs to apply towards a new field. Program is on Sept. 22 from 7-9 p.m. Registration required.

Job/Career Changes Over 50
Back by popular demand, certified career coach Stan Broitman gives job seekers new strategies to either change their careers or locate a new job on Sept. 29 from 6:45-8:45 p.m. Participants must bring a copy of their resume. Registration required. 

Adult/Teenage Jewelry Workshop: Swirl Earrings
Create a pair of dangling earrings infused with a “swirl” of silver and an array of colorful beads on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. Registration required. There is a materials fee of $5 per person.

Learn to Knit with Marlene Proct
While learning about yarn weights, gauging and basic knitting skills, the class will be presented with three projects to reinforce these skills—scarf, shawl and hat. Materials needed to bring to the first session: 1 pair of #9 knitting needles and 1 skein of worsted weight yarn. Limited to 10 participants. Class is on Sept. 17 from 7-8:30 p.m. Register at the Circulation Desk.

Chair Yoga
Can't get down on the floor? Try yoga on a chair with Sandye Pinz on Sept. 22 from 1-2 p.m. This class will provide beginning yoga instruction and practice for people who feel they may not be flexible enough for standard yoga. Limit of 20 participants. Register at the Circulation Desk.

Simply Stronger
Certified personal trainer Marilyn Bunger is here to teach this well received low-impact exercise class on Sept. 23 from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Please bring hand weights or 16oz. water bottles. Please register at the Circulation Desk.

Special Events

Fundraiser for Philip Califano
There will be a fundraiser for Philip Califano, a 6-year-old boy being treated for an inoperable brain stem tumor, at Paddy McGees, 6 Waterview Road in Island Park, on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. There will be music, raffles, food and entertainment for children. All donations will go to Philip’s treatment. For more information, call 897-7653.


Silent Auction
The Island Park United Methodist Church will be sponsoring a Dinner and Silent Auction on Sept. 26 from 5-8 p.m. There are over 60 items to bid on, including a few sets of Islander tickets, passes for Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, museums in the area and several gift certificates for many local restaurants and merchants. Oceanside Kiwanis Mega Yard Sale
Why sit alone in front of your house when you can join friends and neighbors selling their attic treasures and garage goodies on Sept. 26 at the Schoolhouse Green? For only $20 you can rent a space for the whole day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. And your $20 goes to a good cause—sending kids in need to Kamp Kiwanis. Call 536-2200 to reserve your space.

Oktoberfest Celebration
The Oceanside Lutheran Church will have its popular Oktoberfest celebration at the church, 62 Davison Ave (next to Oceanside Library), on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. This year’s celebration will feature a traditional Oktoberfest with an international twist. Those seeking the traditional Oktoberfest experience will be treated to live German music and food. There will be plenty of games, face painting and activities for children including the very popular moon bounce. Those seeking fantastic holiday gifts and bargains will enjoy the "Attic Treasures," homemade foods and handmade crafts sections of the festival, in addition to a fall collection of mums, corn stalks, hay and pumpkins. Garage Sale Fundraiser
The Ladies Auxiliary to V.F.W. Post #5199 in Oceanside will be having a garage sale at the post, at 407 Weidner Ave. on Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The funds raised will be used to sponsor a dinner for hospitalized veterans from Northport and St. Albans.

A Sweet Sukkot
Celebrate Sukkot here at the Friedberg JCC on Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. The day includes a hot, three course buffet luncheon and wonderful live musical entertainment by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys and costs $40. Margot Leveret is a renowned clarinetist who performed as a guest soloist for the Philadelphia Orchestra and Israeli cellist Udi Bar-David. Registration is a must.
