Families in Rockville Centre have been hit hard by the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and the need for support is increasing by the week. As people who have been laid off due to the closure of nonessential businesses and social distancing measures struggle to feed their families, several organizations — with the help of village residents — have stepped up to provide support. Every week, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center opens a food pantry for several hours, and the number of families visiting it has doubled since it first opened last month.

In support of Long Island’s efforts to combat the coronavirus, Molloy College will begin housing visiting health care workers currently employed by Mercy Medical Center. Approximately 40 health care workers, including some of Mercy’s staff, will be housed in the college’s Maria Regina Hall. Molloy will make this temporary housing available at least through May 31.

Last week, the Sandel Senior Center launched a new program on the Village’s TV channel that offers seniors exercise classes. Executive Director Christine O’Leary has want to create such a program for some time, and said she was thrilled that the center was finally able to make it happen.
