Elmont man charged with 12 burglaries across South Shore

Police: He targeted locations in Merrick, Elmont, Franklin Square and Bellmore, among others

An Elmont man was arrested and charged on Oct. 11 in connection with a dozen burglaries across central Nassau County, including at locations in Merrick, Elmont, Floral Park, Hempstead, Franklin Square, Bellmore and Garden City, Nassau County police said.

Detectives nabbed 50-year-old Eric Barnett, of Eureka Avenue in Elmont, as he tried to burglarize the Associated Supermarket, at 301 Jerusalem Ave. in Hempstead, around 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities said.

They noted that he was caught after he climbed over a fence into the supermarket’s rear yard “with the intent to forcibly enter and remove property.”

Detectives arrested Barnett as he attempted to climb back over the fence and drive off in his vehicle.

According to police, an investigation revealed that Barnett was responsible for burglaries at locations across Nassau, including at:

• Pat’s Farm, 1142 Merrick Ave., Merrick, July 8.

• ABC Farms, 1285 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont July 31.

• Galleria Pizzeria, 1339 Merrick Ave., Merrick, Aug. 9.

• Park Place Restaurant, 41 Covert Ave., Floral Park, Aug. 12.

• Wine Gallery, 270 Nassau Blvd., West Hempstead, Aug. 16.

• Bagel on the Square, 529 Franklin Ave., Franklin Square, Aug. 16.

• Ralph’s Italian Ices, 531 Franklin Ave., Franklin Square, Aug. 16.

• International Café, 322 Bedford Ave., Bellmore, Sept. 19.

• Uncle Bacallas, 2370 Jericho Tpke., Garden City, Sept. 23.

• Alpine Restaurant, 11 Franklin Ave., Oct. 01.

• Gilbert’s Liquors, 1160 Merrick Ave., Merrick, Oct. 2.

Barnett was charged with 12 counts of third-degree burglary. He was to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Oct. 12. At press time, there was no word on how he pleaded, and his attorney’s information was not available.
