No one will ever forget

To the Editor:

I wrote this poem in honor of all the souls that were taken away on 9/11:

It’s been 13 years ago innocent lives were taken away.

No one will ever forget that dreadful, painful day.

Each soul that day who left the earth

Were priceless loved ones with so much worth.

My mom hugged each beautiful soul that came through the white light.

She gave them their wings and now they’re all stars that shine all night.

See, mama passed the year before 9/11 took place.

On that dreadful day, she touched gently each soul’s beautiful face.

She told them they’d all never be forgotten as time passes by.

Oh yes, it wasn’t fair that they all did die.

Now they’re angels in heaven who will stand by your side,

Whether you’re trying to smile or shed tears to cry.

I dedicate this poem to each 9/11 soul that was taken away.

No one will ever forget that dreadful, painful day.

Watson needs lights

To the Editor:

As concerned parents and residents of the Rockville Centre community, we are formally requesting that our elected representatives take action and secure the placement of yellow flashing lights to indicate speed limits and speed rate on Lakeview Avenue and North Village Avenue, two busy roads that border Watson Elementary School.

The county has deemed it necessary to install a red-light camera less than 500 feet from the front of the school, because this is such a highly traveled area. In fact, we often see motorists speeding in front of our school to make this light and avoid an enforcement fine.

Our school is located on three county roads, making us dependent on our legislators’ oversight for safety and signage. In the past few weeks, we have had several near misses, including a car accident at the school crossing — just before the children arrived — in which a car landed on a front lawn and pulled down electrical wires.

This corner is also the location of our playground as we undergo construction. Ours is the only school in the district where the children are not able to ride their bikes to school due to the traffic and concerns for their safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter and in helping us prevent a tragedy.
