Weekly Chi Gong lessons at RVC Public Library

Is your Chi in alignment? For the past two months Rockville Centre residents have been meeting in the basement of the Rockville Centre Public Library every Wednesday morning for weekly Chi Gong classes with veteran instructor Marianna Farina.

Popular in China, Chi Gong, which translates from Chinese as, “Life Energy Cultivation,” is a form of light exercise and meditation. Derived from martial arts such as Tai Chi, Chi Gong attempts to balance the body’s energies and maintain a healthy body and mind.

Farina’s classes are tailored to allow students to follow along at their own pace and capabilities. “I always like to say, take what you need and leave the rest,” she said.

With students from a wide range of ages and fitness levels, many appreciate the laid back instruction and atmosphere, “I have fatigue issues so it’s just the right exercise for me,” said long-time student Barbara Van Wagner. “She’s such a great instructor.”

New student Helen Tai was familiar with other forms of exercise but was excited when she found out Chi Gong classes were being taught nearby, “I’ve done Yoga, Zoomba, Tai Chi, but it’s hard to find Chi Gong around here,” she said. “What makes me happy is moving.”

Farina got her start in the performing arts, which shows in her lively instruction, but while she was studying Tai Chi as a hobby she made the connection with Chi Gong when her instructor told her she would be teaching Chi Gong herself one day.

Another long-time student, Terry Capoziello, noted the benefits she feels after the sessions, “You come out of here feeling energized but calm,” she said.

Farina’s elderly mother Emily also attends the sessions and keeps up with Marianna’s every move. She also provides hugs to all the students. “We have a wonderful family,” she said noting the community spirit present in the classes.
