Attic fire in Rockville Centre

RVCFD and neighboring departments extinguish apparent electrical fire

An attic fire on Sunday in Rockville Centre called upon the entire Rockville Centre Fire Department, although no one was injured.

At 12:13 a.m. at 585 Merrick Road, an apparent electrical fire ignited materials stored in the attic of the home. A neighbor called in the fire, which was confined to the attic.

“Good housekeeping can prevent a fire or in the case of a fire, make access easier for firefighters,” said John Thorp, RVCFD chief.

All of Rockville Centre Fire Department’s engines, including the heavy rescue company responded to the call. Neighboring departments, including Baldwin, Malverne, Lynbrook, East Rockaway and Oceanside, assisted in putting out the fire or were on stand-by for additional calls. By the time the firefighters arrived, all of the occupants had already evacuated the house.

The Rockville Centre Fire Department said there is nothing suspicious about the cause of the fire. The electricity has been shut off at the house as a precaution.
