Book of the season

Posted

Hewitt Principal Liz Pryke has been piloting a new literacy program for students in all grade levels. The goal of this endeavor that she’s calling “Book of the Season,” is to promote a love of reading within Hewitt’s community of learners.

At the beginning of each new season, Mrs. Pryke will gift every classroom with a beautifully wrapped book and an accompanying letter introducing her choice. It is her intent to select literature aimed at promoting some of the important tenets of character education, a major curriculum focus throughout the district. Pressing qualities such as respect for others, perseverance, self confidence and kindness are addressed through the eyes of characters in unraveling plots. Mrs. Pryke hopes to stimulate critical thinking by giving students opportunities to consider the ideas, values and ethical questions raised by the author after each of her readings.
